The program takes significant challenges in North American communities and introduces them to a series of transdisciplinary, final-year student teams coming from Urban Design, Mobility, Planning, Logistics, and Tourism at BUas. The program is intended to bring fresh, powerful thinking and diverse viewpoints to unlock new potential. The students work full-time on these projects from September to January each year, producing provocative options that can be applied either immediately or strategically over time. The program has worked with communities in Calgary, Okotoks, Vancouver, Seattle, and Nanaimo. The program has generated dozens of projects that have inspired action across these cities. In recent years, it has evolved to include the living systems lens. Students and professors visit the target communities each year to share their findings, co-create and conduct tactical experiments. The program also presents an excellent opportunity for people from communities across North America to visit the Netherlands each year to meet with researchers, municipal officials, and innovation programs, and to experience firsthand the application of different approaches to neighbourhood design and operation.
